Abstract

Eyes of rats with retinal dystrophy were subject to a surgical method for combined lens extraction and production of total retinal detachment. The resulting subretinal space was adopted for studying the phagocytic reactivity of the retinal pigment epithelium to a suspension of colloidal carbon. By light and electron microscopy it was demonstrated that the cells of this layer were capable of engulfing the tracer. Even in animals with marked retinal degeneration, their phagocytic behaviour was comparable to that observed in the retinal pigment epithelium of the normal rat under identical experimental conditions.
