Abstract

The Au(1 0 0) surface structure in contact with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (EMImBF 4) has been observed using electrochemical atomic force microscopy (EC-AFM) under an electrochemically controlled potential. The AFM images, taken in EMImBF 4 in the potential range from −0.6 to 0.2 V vs. Ag/Ag(I), shows a fourfold symmetry with the distance between protrusions of ≈0.30–0.32 nm. This structure agrees well with the ideal surface structure of Au(1 0 0)-(1 × 1) and it is very similar to that previously obtained in a sulfuric acid aqueous solution.
