Abstract

AbstractThe present study examined the four‐point bending fatigue properties of glass with an initial crack and residual stress induced by Vickers indentation. The fatigue properties of glass with an initial crack are influenced by the residual stress induced by Vickers indentation. Regardless of the presence of residual stress, the failure time under static fatigue is shorter than that under cyclic fatigue. In the region of a small crack, the fatigue crack aspect ratio for glass is smaller than that for metallic materials. The crack growth rate in glass with an initial crack initially decreases and then increases with an increase in the maximum stress intensity factor, Kmax. To investigate the effect of residual stress on the fatigue crack propagation behavior of soda‐lime glass, the in situ observation of fatigue crack propagation was conducted. Crack closure occurs in glass in which tensile residual stress induced by Vickers indentation was released by annealing.
