Abstract

We have performed in the trilayer structure Au/Co/Au(111) precise measurements of the evolution of the polar Magneto-optical Kerr rotation (PMOKE) of ultrathin hcp (0001) Co films on an Au(111) substrate, during the first stages of deposition of an Au overlayer. A multilayer optical model describes the experimental data very well if an interface contribution x 0 is added to the linear dependence with the cobalt thickness. This interface contribution x 0 is equal to 0.2 AL for the vacuum/Co(0001) interface and 0.4 AL for the Au(111)/Co(0001) one for gold thicknesses larger than 6 AL.
