Abstract

Clearance rates for Spongilla lacustris were determined in situ for three particle types. Mean values for Chlamydomonas reinhardti, Escherichia coli, and Rhodotorula glutinis are 0.055, 0.043, and 0.050 ml · s−1 · g−1 wet wt. Comparisons with a number of other freshwater filter feeders show that the rates for sponges are of similar magnitude.
