Abstract

Zein was used as the substrate to provide in situ growth sites the nano-cerium oxide (CeO2), a hydrophilic polymer polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) served as stabilizer for nano-ceria, novel zein/PVP/CeO2 ternary composite films have been successfully designed by the in situ low-temperature (ISLT) sol-gel growth. Different from the simple conventional low-temperature (CLT) sol-gel method, nano-cerium oxide shows controllable shape, narrow size distribution and good dispersivity. In addition, the CeO2-embedded hybrid films exhibit superior ultraviolet (UV) blocking properties, high transparency and hygroscopic capacity, which broaden the practical application range of nano-cerium oxide.
