Abstract

In situ Fe-rich particles reinforced Mg-based metallic glass matrix composites have been successfully fabricated by using dealloying reaction in metallic melt. The average size of homogeneously distributed Fe-rich particles (~3 μm) was close to the plastic processing zone size of the matrix, benefiting the interactions between shear bands and the interactions between the secondary phase and the shear band. The composites exhibited plastic strain of 5.6% and fracture strength of 901 MPa during compression test, significantly improved when comparing with the base alloy. The Fe-rich particles hinder the rapid propagation of main shear bands, causing stopping, branching and multiplication of them.
