Abstract

In order to obtain controllable morphology ZrB2-SiC composite powders, a two-step calcination method (TSC) was designed to separate the formation process of ZrB2 (1300 °C) and SiC (1400 °C), which is beneficial to the growth and self-assembly of ZrB2 rods. Besides the Si content also affected the morphology of final product. The results show that in ZrB2-SiC with lower Si content, ZrB2 rods with a diameter of 1–2 μm and aspect ratios of ∼8 are randomly distributed, but with increasing Si addition, ZrB2 rods started to be oriented arrange and assembled to clusters. The ZrB2-SiC with 30 vol% SiC obtained by TSC had the ZrB2 with clusters, and spherical SiC particles well dispersed among rods.
