Abstract

Significant investments in landfill gas utilisation projects are required at project commencement. The methane generation rate for the Villa Dominico Landfill in Buenos Aires, Argentina is 0.26 yr−1, a very high rate as a result of the high organic content in the waste, and high moisture conditions within the refuse. The implications for landfills is that landfill gas recovery projects must be implemented quickly before it is lost to the atmosphere, as the findings indicate that after refuse placement, 73% of the LFG is generated within the first five years and 93% of the LFG is generated within the first ten years.
