Abstract

In this paper, we report on the formation of striae generated by the mechanical instability of anodic oxide films formed on aluminum rod surfaces. These striae form a regular arrangement of straight lines parallel to the axis of the electrode rod. An anodization cell with an axially symmetric current distribution was built in order to generate an isotropic stress distribution in the anodic film. The mechanical instability of this film was analyzed using Euler's method applied to thin cylindrical shells under compressive forces.
