Abstract

The study of diffusion in polymeric gels often poses difficult experimental problems, notably when the rate of release is determined in a liquid receptor phase which can interact with the gel. In this publication, we propose an accurate method to determine the diffusion coefficient by a gel-gel kinetic release study. The method is based on the use of a multi-channel radioactivity counter to obtain the in situ concentration profile of the diffusing molecule in the gel where a concentration gradient has been determined initially. In the first part, the theoretical interpretations of such profiles are given. In the second part, an experimental example of the method applied to the diffusion of testosterone in a silicic acid gel is presented.
