Abstract

When silver nanocrystals are immobilized on the surface of a gold electrode and anodically oxidized to silver iodide or bromide, in situ AFM shows that a few large silver halide crystals are formed out of a large number of small silver crystals. This can only be understood when the oxidation leads primarily to an oversaturated solution from which subsequently the silver halide crystals precipitate.
