Abstract

The hydrogen discharge on polished pure Co, Cu, Fe, Mo, Nb, Ni, Pd, Pt, V, W and Zr cathodes in 30 wt% KOH at 70°C has been investigated at a constant current density of 100 mA cm −2. Initial electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) decreases in the following order: Pt > Ni > Co > Fe, Mo, Pd > W > Cu > V > Nb > Zr. This order is largely modified after 10 4 s at 100 mA cm −2 because of deactivation or activation. The addition of sodium molybdate to the electrolyte at that moment in time results in a rapid drop in the hydrogen overpotential. All electrodes reach the same hydrogen overpotential 6 × 10 4 s after the addition of 4 mM sodium molybdate.
