Abstract
Through the combination of the genres of narrative and theater and the inclusion of metaliterary elements and metaphors, Valenzuela creates an intricate text open to a variety of critical approaches. The theatrical considerations of the novel are particularly interesting, and it is from the perspective of performance that I undertake this analysis. The novel begins in the style of the detective genre; however, it rapidly disintigrates into a story that goes nowhere. This compels the reader to examine the relationships of characters to each other as the ontological considerations of the postmodernist text are foregrounded.!
