Abstract

This article presents a method of music psychotherapy for adults with developmental injuries and arrests from problems which occur during early stages of attachment. Literature references on the early mother-child relationship, psychotherapy for people with dissociative defenses, and the role of the voice in relation to physical and psychological health are used to present two vocal improvisational methods. These methods provide empathy, mirroring, and grounding through which the therapist and client enter into a simulated mother-child relationship and move toward the repair of problematic attachment. Case examples with audio excerpts of therapy sessions provide description of the methods.
