Abstract
The story of the martyrdoms, during the reign of Antiochus IV Epiphanes, of an elderly Jewish scribe or priest and lawyer named Eleazar and of seven brothers and their mother is told in 2 Macc 6:18-7:42, and in a considerably expanded version, in 4 Macc 5-18. Text-critically relevant translations of 4 Maccabees are few in number. In fact, the Syriac version (Sy) is the only one that is fully extant. The work of a textual critic involves judicious evaluation of both external and internal evidence in extant textual witnesses. This chapter deals with examples of kinds of problems that has been encountered in assessing the manuscript evidence while attempting to reconstruct the original Septuagint text of 4 Maccabees.
