Abstract

Dr. Haley correctly identifies two separate but related issues which are explored in our article. First, how does hexachlorophene (HCP) bathing affect the rate of colonization with Staphylococcus aureus? Second, how does HCP bathing affect the occurrence of disease caused by S. aureus? Evidence that the risk of disease increases when rates of colonization increase has been available for many years. See, for example, the article by Hardyment et al., which was written in an era when staphylococcal disease among newborns was widespread.1
