Abstract

By a randomized double-blind prospective study including 88 patients aged 20–70 years, Kim et al1 assessed the effect of using nitrous oxide during general anesthesia on the intracuff pressure of the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) Protector and the occurrence of postoperative sore throat (PST). They showed that the use of nitrous oxide significantly increased the intracuff pressure of the LMA, but did not affect the occurrence of PST. Given that increased intracuff pressure of the LMA by nitrous oxide is a known troublesome problem, and PST is a common complication that can lead to significant discomfort of patient after surgery and delay in patients’ returning to normal daily activity,2,3 findings of this study have potential clinical implications.
