Abstract

Understanding how young teen girls use music to navigate the emotional dramas of first love presents an important insight into the part media play in teens’ processes of identity formation. Through analysis of forum postings on the official Taylor Swift website, I explore how teen girls “talk” about Swift's music in an effort to understand how these girls use the lyrics of Swift songs in a prospective remembering of their future relationships. While many of Swift's lyrics reinforce social norms around the search for a Prince, I argue that they also highlight the complexity of relationships and foster a sense of nostalgia in reverse for young teen girls. My analysis draws attention to the integral role of this online forum as a safe space for the self-disclosure of feelings and as a key mechanism of emotional support during the teen years.
