Abstract

The class had just finished a mathematics lesson on multiplication and was preparing for lunch. The students had created edible “spiders” out of crackers, peanut butter, pretzels, and raisins. The teacher had given the class a recipe for one spider. The challenge for students was to calculate how much of each ingredient was needed for each small group so that each group member could make his or her own spider. The smell of peanut butter was making the children very hungry, and some had started to eat their peanut-butter-andcracker spiders. However, most of the Hispanic children were wrapping their spiders in paper napkins and putting them in their desks. They were saving their treats to take home so that they could share them with their families. As the children were doing this, many of my childhood memories began to surface. How many times had I saved things to share at home?
