Abstract

Howard Brown received his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology from Mississippi State University in 1989, where he was mentored by the late John H. Peterson, Jr., Professor of Sociology and Anthropology. For a time he was Director of outpatient substance abuse services for Humana Hospital in Natchez, Mississippi. In 1990 he joined the faculty of the Department of Behavioral Studies in the School of Education, University of Missouri, St. Louis, where he was expected to receive tenure this year. He also maintained a private practice with Mid-County Physicians in Kirkwood, Missouri, and was a regular contributor to Alcoholism Treatment Quarterly. Howard's body, 45 years old, was found at home on October 23, 1995. He was buried in a country churchyard on the side of a hill aflame with the colors of late autumn.
