Abstract

Oliver Cromwell Cox was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad, on August 25, 1901. At eighteen he came to the United States to work and complete his education, originally intending to follow the path of his elder brother and become a physician. Later, however, he changed his plans. After graduating from the YMCA High School in Chicago, he studied law and was awarded a degree from Northwestern University in 1928. He went on to the University of Chicago, where he received both an M.A. in economics (1932) and a Ph.D. in sociology (1938).This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website.
