She made her stage debut in Romeo and Juliet in 1945 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and played Desdemona in Othello the following year. She was one of the original members of the Actor’s Studio. She made her Broadway debut in Sundown Beach in 1948, and the following year she was an original cast member in Sidney Kingsley’s Detective Story. Among other Broadway appearances, she played opposite Danny Kaye in Richard Rodgers’s Two by Two and she starred as Vera in the 1977 revival of Pal Joey, for which she was nominated for a Drama Desk Award as Outstanding Actress in a Musical.
