Abstract

The director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), Nora Volkow, M.D., closed a two‐day seminar on public health and marijuana in March by noting that two legal drugs — alcohol and tobacco — can be deadly. Alcohol is the third‐leading cause of death worldwide, and tobacco's relationship to cancer and other diseases is well‐known. “We don't want to emulate alcohol and tobacco,” Volkow said, addressing the audience of researchers and policymakers.
