Abstract

The current research describes the ring opening polymerization of lactide starting with monomer synthesis up to accelerated polymerization. Different analytical techniques such as DSC, FTIR, GC, GPC, hot-stage optical microscopy, and rheometry were used to study the monomer synthesis/purification and the accelerated polymerization in the presence of tin (II) octate and triphenyl phosphate. It is shown that the catalyst/accelerator concentration has a significant influence on the polymerization rate, final product properties, and polymer morphology. Polylactic acid polymers with weight average molecular weight of more than 200 kg/mol and monomer conversion above 97% were achieved in 15 min.
