Abstract

Following the outcome of the 2020 Iowa Democratic Party caucuses, Iowa’s first-in-the-nation caucus status is in serious jeopardy. A number of commentators and scholars have criticized the Iowa caucuses. This Article contends the Iowa caucuses are a positive process for American democracy. This Article proffers five primary arguments why Iowa should retain its first-in-the-nation caucus status: 1) the Iowa caucuses promote civic engagement and civic responsibility; 2) the Iowa caucuses promote a personal touch to politics; 3) Iowans take the caucus process seriously; 4) the Iowa caucuses are healthy for democracy; and 5) the Iowa caucuses promote underdog candidates.
