Abstract

The respiratory mucus membrane is continuously bombarded with a variety of noxious substances, including microorganisms, chemicals, gaseous pollutants, dust and others. In order to prevent the penetration of mucosal barrier, the body has devised a number of protective forces. 1'2 The efficiency of these defense mechanisms is documented by the sterility of the lung from the first br6nchial division down to terminal alveolar spaces. This review summarizes the host protective factors as applied to the respiratory system.
