Abstract
Rapid induction with naltrexone, and children who lost parents to drug overdoses, are two important studies that were released last week in the midst of the American Psychiatric Association's (APA) annual meeting. Both studies were funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse and will be covered in next week's issue. Meanwhile, reflecting at the APA's addiction‐themed conference covered in this issue, ADAW was reminded of another APA conference years ago, in which we were in the audience surrounded by psychiatrists who were listening, somewhat distractedly, to a presentation about addiction. “Why do we have to hear this addiction stuff,” we overheard one audience member say to another. So for those who think progress isn't taking place, it is. Kudos to outgoing APA president Petros Levounis, M.D., for his work on this and also to American Journal of Psychiatry editor Kathleen Brady for the current addiction‐themed issue. There are probably some psychiatrists who still wonder why they need to know about addiction. If they were at last week's conference, though, they don't have any more questions.
