Abstract

A Senate panel advanced legislation to designate 988 as a national suicide prevention hotline, Bloomberg Law reported Dec. 11. The Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation Committee unanimously approved S. 2661, introduced by Sen. Cory Gardner (R‐Colorado), which would replace the current 10‐digit code 1‐800‐273‐8255 (TALK). “This bill is going to save lives,” Gardner said before the vote. “Think about how easy it's going to be for people to dial 988 for help.” The Federal Communications Commission is working on a parallel track to establish a 988 national hotline. The commission released a report earlier this year recommending the change.
