Abstract

Your brain gets smaller as you age; it's normal. Except that heavy alcohol use — even going from one to three drinks a day — is like aging your brain more than three years, according to a recent study published in Nature Communications. “These findings contrast with scientific and governmental guidelines on safe drinking limits,” said co‐author Henry Kranzler, M.D., who directs the Penn Center for Studies of Addiction. “For example, although the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism recommends that women consume an average of no more than one drink per day, recommended limits for men are twice that, an amount that exceeds the consumption level associated in the study with decreased brain volume.” For the study, go to https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467‐022‐28735‐5.
