Abstract

The Sept. 29 debate between President Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Vice President Joe Biden contained a particularly painful sparring spot for people in recovery and their loved ones to watch, and Biden emerged as the clear winner. Referring to Beau, Biden's son who served in the military and died from brain cancer, Trump merely dismissed him, saying “I don't know Beau.” Then Trump pivoted to Biden's younger son, Hunter, accusing him of being dishonorably discharged “for cocaine use.” “That's not true,” Biden said. And then Biden went on to say “My son, like a lot of people you know at home, had a drug problem. He's overtaken it. He's fixed it. He's worked on it, and I'm proud of him. I'm proud of my son.”
