Abstract

On Feb. 15, The Wall Street Journal ran a story about two Ohio counties and what they will do with drug settlement money. Apparently, there is so much money that they don't know what to do with it. Of course, many requests are coming in, but one county may have to hire someone to dole it out. There was one treatment center with 30 beds built. Overdose deaths have not gone down. Kudos to the reporters for honing in on this. The question ‘why did you ask for it if you don't know what to do with it’ comes to mind. One thing is clear, however: To their credit, both counties want to avoid having the money used to offset budget gaps in the general fund, which is what happened with the tobacco settlement money (https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/adaw.20080).
