Abstract
Clinicians need to focus more on treating alcohol use disorders in older people. A new study has found that one in 10 older adults is a binge drinker. The study, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, used National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism definitions of binge drinking: five or more drinks in a sitting for men, and four or more for women. A drink is a can or bottle of beer, a glass of wine, a shot of liquor or a mixed drink. The study used data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, which included almost 11,000 adults age 65 or older who reported their drinking habits in the past 30 days.
