Abstract

Alaska needs help treating alcohol use disorders (AUDs), and a tax on alcoholic beverages will help. Police would get the largest amount of money from the proceeds of the tax, however. Only some of these millions of dollars would go to treatment and prevention. The 5% tax was originally expected to raise $11 million to $15 million. Current estimates are $11.8 million, which would go to: public safety (police) ($4.1 million), child abuse and domestic violence prevention ($3.1 million), and $4.5 million divided between substance use prevention and treatment and help for the homeless.
