Abstract

Most of the stories in this issue are about how prevention, treatment, and recovery for addiction can translate into jobs for the addiction workforce. But let's not forget one of the most powerful recovery supports, grounded in mutual support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous. It's called volunteering. Whether done as a sponsor at AA, or in completely non‐substance‐related work, like cleaning up litter or food pantries, volunteering is not only good for the soul, it's also good for your physical health. “Giving back” is a tenet of old‐school recovery. Sometimes, the oldest ideas are the best. You may find yourself alongside a CEO in a volunteer capacity because that CEO knows the volunteer work is helping him or her stay in recovery.
