Abstract

Maybe they should be called the sloshed islands. The bad news for the tourist industry of the spice islands, a popular tourist retreat in Zanzibar, is an alcohol shortage. Beer prices went up 100%, thanks to a supply chain disruption. The tourism minister resigned recently, possibly due to problems with alcohol supplies. The vast majority of foreign revenue for the African travel destination comes from tourism. But according to a report from the BBC, some “tourist hotels along the Matemwa beaches in the north of Zanzibar's main island are only serving soft drinks, and people in that area say they have to go to the main city, Stone Town, for alcohol.” But in fact, even though it plies tourists with alcohol, Zanzibar — where most people are Muslim — bans the manufacturing of alcohol locally. One American tourist, who did not want to be named, said, “I love Zanzibar and its beaches. The people are amazing and the only challenge I feel now is I can't get hard liquor. I want to have spirits, or even whisky, but nothing is found in the hotel; they instead advised me to order it from Stone Town.”
