Abstract
For those readers who are NSDUH (National Survey on Drug Use and Health) nerds, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has a new, second survey. The Mental and Substance Use Disorders Prevalence Study (MDPS) includes gaps not covered by the NSDUH: Those who do not reside in households; including homeless, institutionalized or incarcerated populations. These populations, according to SAMHSA, have disproportionately high rates of mental health and substance use disorders. Between October 2020 and October 2022, this study, conducted in partnership with the research organization, RTI International, conducted 5,679 clinical interviews among 18–65‐year‐olds, including those living in households, prisons, state psychiatric hospitals and homeless shelters.
