Abstract

Drug dealers have been selling marijuana illegally for years, and making good money doing it. But they can't afford to join the legal sellers now taking over — or seeking to take over — the New York market, according to a recent article. The startup and licensing costs are too much for these drug sellers, who say they cannot compete with the well‐heeled big firms (some backed by alcohol, tobacco, hedge fund, and other moneys) now dominating the legal, in most states, recreational cannabis industry. The article, “They Have Sold Pot for Years. Now They Want to Go Legal. Can They?,” was published in The New York Times, May 11, 2022, and refers to the long‐time drug dealers as “legacy” sellers.
