Abstract

New York's legal recreational marijuana industry is not going well. The huge state has opened only 12 dispensaries. The black market is rampant. Farmers who replanted their food crops with marijuana now have more product than they know what to do with. Last year's harvest is still waiting to be sold, and it's time for another harvest. Farmer's markets may be the next best option. It's not only New York — other states have the same problem. But in New York, dispensaries were only going to be awarded to people who could show they had been jailed for marijuana possession, which took time, so even though recreational use was legal, there was no legal dispensary. “Unlicensed shops rushed in to fill the void,” Fortune magazine reported last week. Now, it's a losing battle for farmers, as last year's “flower” may soon become too old to even sell.
