Abstract

The recommended maximum number of drinks a day is still two for men and one for women. You may have seen recent coverage saying that the federal guidelines for alcohol consumption are changing from no more than two drinks a day for men to no more than one drink a day for men. But the guidelines aren't changing yet. Here's what happened: The Dietary Guidelines Advisory Committee Report was released by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) on July 15. Along with the Department of Health and Human Services, the USDA will consider public comment on these recommendations. The new dietary guidelines for 2020–25 will be released later this year. The “1 and 2” guidelines are in the 2015–20 (still current) version. See https://www.dietaryguidelines.gov/ for more information on the process. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) will play a big part in the final guidelines. NIAAA still says no more than two for men and one for women. (The USDA guidelines were previously no more than one drink a day for women, and still are under the recommended changes.)
