Abstract
Australian scientists studying the use of aquifers to store urban stormwater and reclaimed water for reuse in irrigation received the inaugural International Water Prize for Innovation in Water Resources Management in Arid and Semi-Arid Areas, presented recently by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). “While aquifer storage and recovery is not a new concept, what is unique about our work is the quality of the water recovered,” said Russell Martin of the South Australia Department for Water Resources. The effort is a joint venture between that group and Australia's Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO).
