Abstract

The Italian government is taking steps to tackle the country's increasing problem with obesity. According to Michele Carruba, President of the Antiobesity Committee established by the Italian Ministry of Health, obesity has reached epidemic proportions with >4 million people meeting the clinical definition for the condition and another 16 million overweight. This is believed to be costing the country around 22.8 billion Euros every year, with 7.2% of people with obesity reducing their workload and 5.5% stopping work altogether. The government has been alarmed at a recent report revealing that obesity increases by 25% every 4–5 years. Health Minister, Girolamo Sirchia, said at the launch of the 4th report on ‘Obesity in Italy’ that the government plan would re-equip diabetes centres to deal with a range of obesity-related conditions, and private money would be used to pay for campaigns encouraging fitness and relaunching the Mediterranean diet. It is also hoped to curb the use of self-help diets and weight-loss products (http://www.medscape.com/diabetes-endocrinologyhome). CK
