Abstract

An Indian paper factory, Tamil Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd (TNPL, Kagithapuram), is setting an example of efficient resource usage for the world. The paper mill uses wind-generated power and produces paper from 75% bagasse, a fibrous waste product from sugar refining, and 25% plantation eucalypt fibre. Further, scientists are working with TNPL to develop technology that uses few bleaching chemicals and results in no toxic organic chemicals. The plant produces 600 tonnes of paper product daily. The annual sales from the company are US$130 million. The resourceful factory reduces tree harvesting by an estimated 30 000 acres (12 146 Ha) per annum. [Maguire, K.
