Abstract

A better understanding of environmental causes and triggers of asthma, including those found in certain workplaces, could have an important role in controlling this chronic inflammatory disease. A new study reports that artists, designers, photographers and other entertainment industry workers are five times more likely to have work-related asthma than other workers. The authors, led by Ahmed A. Arif (Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, TX, USA), speculated that the increased risk of asthma among entertainment industry workers could be potentially caused by their exposure to chemicals used in art media, stage set production, theatrical make-up and photographic chemicals. The authors hope that confirmed associations between certain industries and asthma will assist health agencies in targeting their interventions in the future. Occup. Environ. Med.
