Abstract

The Alan Guttmacher Institute (AGI) has been awarded a US$7.5 million grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation for improving programs and policies regarding youth, HIV and AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. Working with research partners in four countries, AGI will use these funds to perform a unique and detailed five-year investigation of why young people engage in high-risk sexual behaviors, and why existing programs and policies may be falling short in helping to prevent the spread of infection. The grant is extremely timely because recent evidence shows that adolescents have at >35% chance of dying of AIDS in some southern and eastern African countries. AGI (http://www.gutmacher.org) is a non-profit organization focused on sexual and reproductive health research, policy analysis and public education, with offices in New York and Washington DC, USA.
