Abstract

Robert Brenners The Economics of Global Turbulence was published as a special issue of New Left Review. Brenners study focuses, in particular, upon the continuing competitive struggle between US, German and Japanese capital. Although he credits US success in repressing workers for its part, Brenner particularly stresses the currency valuation shifts arising from the Plaza Accord of 1985 for improving the state of US manufacturing and deteriorating those of Japan and Germany. Brenner, is not the first person working within the framework of Marxs theory to write about the postwar crisis. Faring even worse in Brenners eyes as an adequate theoretical explanation of the long downturn is the traditional falling rate of profit argument, which he labels the Fundamentalist Marxist theory.
