Abstract
In-beam Mossbauer spectroscopy is applied to study implanted Fe atoms in the alkali metals Li, Na and K. From the Mossbauer parameters we infer that the Fe implants take up substitutional as well as interstitial sites. The strongly increased electron density at the interstitial position is qualitatively explained by the pressure resulting from the small interstitial volume. It is concluded that recently reported local moment formation in these systems cannot be due to substitutional Fe only.
