Abstract
Out-of-pile extractions after short irradiations were conducted on LiAlO 2 and LiAl 5 O 8 samples of different grain sizes. Extraction was conducted by flushing the samples either with pure argon or argon plus 0.1% hydrogen, in the temperature range 450°C to 850°C. Tritium is extracted more readily from small grain samples than from large grain ones. Hydrogen addition induces the fast extraction of a large part of the tritium as gas. But with LiAlO 2 , a smaller fraction remains under water form in spite of this addition, proving the existence of several tritiated species and the formation of water within the sample itself. In the in-pile LISA experiment, hydrogen addition decreased inventories. Experimental curves of activity changes can be fitted by calculations involving a surface effect as the rate determining step of extraction. Results are compared with those of the LILA and TRIO experiments.
