Abstract

Suggested is a hypothesis on the possibility of formation of some specific metastable solid phase in liquid helium, comprising the “frozen together” van der Waals spheres consisting of impurity atoms (molecules) surrounded by 4He atoms. The data of model experiments on condensation of nitrogen and neon atoms in superfluid helium are consistent with this hypothesis. In the experiments with Ne it was shown that heating the condensate to T=8.5±0.5 K results in its decomposition, in the manner of a phase transition.
