Abstract

The properties of a real metal are determined not only by its elemental properties but to a comparable extent by the presence of irregularities in its lattice structure. Such deviations from the perfect structure (defects) can either be caused by atoms of the metal itself which do not occupy regular lattice sites (intrinsic defects) or by atoms of other elements on regular or irregular sites (impurity defects).
